Chapter 12

I stare at the clock on the wall. It’s eight at night, meaning he’s denied me orgasm for hours. I’m exhausted and sated and could spend another six hours bent over the table suffering through orgasm denial only so I could experience the end result again.

“I have a feeling you enjoyed that,” Gabriel says and lifts my chin. He looks like a smug lazy tiger with that smirk on his face.

“Mmmm,” is all I manage.

Gabriel tilts his head, a gesture I would associate with a bird. “Stay in the house.” He sweeps me off the table and puts me on the floor, then heads out.

“What’s going on?” I take a few steps after him, but my knees are shaking.

At the door, he spins. “Stay inside.”

“Is there someone outside?” Is it one of the students? News of them?

“‘Yes, Your Highness’ is the only acceptable answer. If I have to discipline you again, I will.”

Hmmmm.

He narrows his eyes. “I’ll use a cane.”

“Okay, never mind that.” I sit down and chew my bottom lip.

Gabriel exits. Minutes pass while I stare at the door, wondering if there’s a peephole. Slowly, I tiptoe to the windows and part the sheer curtains to see an angel with black wings perched on the gate. Old scars show on his face and body, and he wears armor and a belt with an elaborate insignia, telling me he’s a decorated warrior angel. There’s armor over the tops of his wings. I believe this is Uriel, and his very presence scares me. Something big is happening.

Gabriel walks to the gate, and Uriel hops off to meet him. They don’t seem to exchange any pleasantries, shake hands, or hug or smile before Uriel’s mouth moves. I can read lips, and I focus on his mouth, but then he steps to his left and Gabriel’s back blocks my view.

Carefully, slowly, silently, I unlatch the window.

Gabriel spins around.

Uriel stares right at me, which reminds me I’m nude. I gather up the curtains and swing open the window all the way because I’ve lost my stealth element. “I’m still in the house,” I announce.

“Why, hello there, mortal,” the angel says, then smiles, hiding his sharp flesh-tearing canines under his bottom lip. His eyes lift at the corners with what I’d describe as amusement.

I wave. “Hi.”

Gabriel steps in front of the angel, and once more, I can’t read Uriel’s lips. Just as well because he switches to Heavlense. Right as I’m about to give up on getting the scoop, I hear Mary and Mike mentioned. I continue listening. Suddenly, the angels lift off.

“Gabriel,” I call out.

Both angels turn and stare me down.

“What’s going on? I heard the students’ names.”

“They have returned.”

“Oh my God.” Instantly, tears come forth, and I’m so happy to hear they’ve returned that I don’t know if I’ll cry for an hour or laugh instead. “Where are they?”

“Stay in the house,” Gabriel says, then turns, but the other angel descends and extends a hand, palm up in the same way Gabriel did that one day in his office.
